Local AI in a Smart Home: What Must Work Without the Cloud

Local architecture is not a fashionable label. It determines whether essential home scenarios continue during an internet outage and who controls data about daily life.

What Local-First Means in Practice

Essential home logic runs on a controller inside the property, while the internet remains an additional channel.

A local controller receives sensor events, applies rules and sends commands to actuators. Lighting, climate setpoints, curtains and notifications should not depend on an external API being available.

Cloud services may provide remote access, backup notifications, updates or resource-intensive analytics. If they become unavailable, the system follows a predefined fallback mode rather than stopping.

Camera-Free Presence Uses Multiple Signals

One sensor does not provide enough context for dependable scenarios in every room.

mmWave sensors help detect presence and micro-movement. Door contacts, temperature, humidity, CO₂ and energy data add context. BLE or UWB may identify a device or zone when agreed with the owner.

Wi-Fi CSI remains an experimental RF layer and must not be the sole basis for critical actions. HouseFriend does not promise perfect person identification or present a probability as a confirmed fact.

The Data Boundary Must Be Defined Before Installation

The owner should know which events are stored, where they are sent and how long they are retained.

Zone states, automation logs, configurations and diagnostic events may remain inside the property. External services receive only the minimum required by the approved contract.

Remote access requires separate authorization, logging and revocation. Configuration export, history deletion and backup rules are documented in the design and operating materials.

The Cloud Is Useful When It Is Not a Single Point of Failure

Remote services can extend capabilities but should not own the basic operation of the home.

Appropriate cloud tasks include off-site notifications, aggregated analytics, service diagnostics, updates and external integrations. Each task needs a timeout, retry, fallback and partial-failure behavior.

If a provider discontinues a service, the owner should retain local scenarios, manual control and the ability to maintain equipment through documented interfaces.

What to Verify Before Selecting a Local AI Solution

A sound architecture is verified by specific answers, not by the word local in a presentation.

Where do essential scenarios run and what happens without internet access?
Which data leaves the property and can transmission be disabled?
Who has remote access and where are their actions logged?
Can the configuration be exported and individual components replaced?
Which functions are experimental and what deterministic fallback is provided?
Which documents and tests does the owner receive at acceptance?
